Chief Operating Officer

For over 170 years, the Erie Cemetery Association (ECA) has served as the final resting place for more than 50,000 Erieites, including General Strong Vincent, Daniel Dobbins, and Sarah A. Reed. Situated on seventy-five acres, the Erie Cemetery is located in the heart of Erie at West 21st and Chestnut Streets. In addition to the Erie Cemetery, ECA also includes Laurel Hill and Wintergreen Gorge Cemeteries. All three sites offer raised and monument lots, flush cremation lots, columbarium niches, and some flush marker graves for sale at the time of need. Governed by a Board of Trustees and operated by an exceptional team, the Erie Cemetery Associate seeks the next Chief Operating Officer and lead the organization into the future.

Key qualifications and responsibilities for the Chief Operating Office role including, but are not limited to the following:

Qualifications
1) Experience: Minimum 10+ years relevant operations management experience.
2) Cemetery management and/or funeral industry experience a plus/preferred.
3) Education: minimum of an Associate degree is preferred.
4) “Preferred or “equivalent experience.”
5) Valid PA driver’s license.
6) Willing to work on Saturdays & Sundays to accommodate families, as needed.
7) Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability to leverage Find a Grave as needed.

Operations Management
1) Provides expertise and leadership for developing program priorities, new initiatives, and relationships to grow ECA in service to constituents
2) Assures customer satisfaction for the families, funeral directors, clergy & friends of the deceased.
3) Determines contracted services and manages all vendor relationships, related to equipment and facilities.
4) Ensures compliance with local, state & federal regulatory requirements.
5) Develops and administers cemetery policies and services under the authority of the Board of Trustees.
6) Participates in the design, layout, planning, budgeting & timely completion of capital projects.
7) Manages interment in burial plots, mausoleums, niches, cremation gardens, cremation services and grave maintenance.
8) Supports & engages with the ECA Foundation.
9) Facilitates Strategic Planning initiatives; identifying industry trends.

Human Resources
1) Manages ECA staff and temporary labor to maintain ECA facilities & grounds while minimizing labor cost & overtime.
2) Provides labor oversight and management, motivating a team, ultimately increasing productivity, engagement, and revenue.
3) Develops long-range plans, establish priorities, budgets, and short-term plans to advance ECA and serve constituents
4) Responsible for overseeing all benefits, including insurances and 457b.
5) Provides training & development opportunities.
6) Administrates and enforces all Organizational policies.
7) Oversees all recruitment, retention, compensation, termination and performance management practices.

Fiscal Management
1) Oversees and monitors annual budgets, regulating expenditures to achieve budget goals and increase net income, in consultation with relevant Board Committees.
2) Establishes financial controls.
3) Recommends revenue producing strategies that are fundamental to the successful long-term operation of the ECA.
4) Participates with the ECA Investment Committee to grow the ECA endowment and adhere to the spending policy limitations.
5) Reports on monthly sales & financial performance to the Treasurer and ECA Board and report on business opportunities, project status and challenges.
6) Presents annual fiscal & operational reports to Board of Corporators.
7) Reports to data and reports on industry trends that will influence the ECA.
8) Responsible for the fiscal integrity of ECA operations and ensures oversight of the fiscal management.

Marketing & Communications
1) Internal: Must have a cooperative relationship with the ECA Team, Board of Trustees, and field employees.
2) External: Must interface with companies that supply materials or services, family members of the deceased, clergy members, funeral directors, lot owners and the community in general.
3) Along with Board Committee, Coordinates marketing and communication strategies to promote ECA services and ensures ongoing revenue derived from operations; support strategic priorities of the Organization.
4) Along with Board Committee, creates and implements strategies of community networking and marketing to raise public awareness of the ECA.
5) Maintains website and evaluates social media platforms and opportunities.

Governance
1) Builds a productive working relationship with the Board of Trustees and Board of Corporators to advance the mission of ECA. Work alongside committees to advance the strategic priorities.
2) Serves as Secretary for ECA, preparing and providing information necessary for the Board of Trustees to function properly to make informed decisions. Responsible for scheduling and attending committee and Board Meetings, preparing agendas and associated materials, and keeping minutes.
3) Identifying and engaging prospective Corporator Members.

Physical Requirements
1) Must be able to lift 25/50 pounds at a time.
2) Must be able to safely climb ladders and stairs while carrying xx pounds.
3) Must be able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
4) Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
5) Must be able to respond quickly to sounds.

The Erie Cemetery Association offers a comprehensive and competitive compensation and benefits package.

Salary Range: $ 90,000-110,000
