Maintenance Technician

Maintenance Technician with Crawford County Coalition on Housing Needs

General Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, and in collaboration with the Board of Directors, the Maintenance Technician of the Crawford County Coalition on Housing Needs, Inc. (hereafter, Coalition) coordinates physical maintenance of the Coalition’s properties.

The Coalition’s Board of Directors operates through a committee structure which currently consists of an Executive Committee, a Planning Committee, Property and Maintenance Committee, Finance Committee, Personnel Committee and Policy Committee. These committees undertake the governance requirements for the non-profit corporation including financial oversight and adherence to the Coalition’s mission and its duty to its tenants and to the community and entities providing funding to the Coalition. The Maintenance Technician will work with the Executive Director, Coalition Staff, Board Committees, and Volunteers to further the mission of the Coalition and to carry out the duties of the position.

Job Function: Maintain and improve the physical condition of the Coalition properties. At present the Coalition owns and operates a 10-apartment building, which includes the county’s Emergency
Shelter, a building containing six transitional-housing apartments and three offices, four single-family houses, and a duplex.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect facilities periodically to determine problems and necessary maintenance
  • Conduct basic repairs and maintenance*
  • Hire tradesmen for complex installations, repairs, or maintenance (electricians, plumbers etc.)
  • Maintain materials inventory and equipment
  • Respond to tenants’ emergency calls pertaining to maintenance issues
  • Coordinate the inspection and maintenance of building systems (heating, ventilation etc.)
  • Assist in developing the Coalition’s maintenance budget
  • Participate in the coordination of significant projects (e.g., renovations, roof replacement)
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and health and safety regulations


*Basic repairs and maintenance w ill include things such as the following:
Patch drywall, paint, replace light fixtures, replace faucets, spigots, shower heads; repair a leaky sink or toilet; paint the deck and replace failing spindles in the railing; clean low-level gutters; fix the locks; adjust a sticky door; install flooring; repair cabinets; replace door knobs

The Coalition’s Maintenance Technician will determine the supplies and equipment needed for such repairs/maintenance, get them, and complete the repairs/maintenance.

Qualifications: Strong technical knowledge of all building systems (electrical, heating etc.);
Knowledge of health & safety practices and regulations; Excellent problem-solving skills; Accurate analysis of situations, adopting effective courses of action; Effectively organize, plan, prioritize and schedule work, meeting schedules and time lines; Record keeping experience; Maintain current knowledge of technological advances in the field; Strong Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy; Able to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; Ability to work independently; Proactive and self-starting.

Physical Demands: Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively. Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull weights, up to 100 pounds.

Education and Experience: Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in property maintenance or similar with references.

Required Clearances:
1. Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance;
2. Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check; and
3. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Criminal History Background Check

At the successful completion of the 90-day probationary period, employees will be reimbursed for the cost of obtaining these clearances.

Guidelines for Performance

  • Perform duties in a professional manner that reflects positively on the agency and is in accordance with the Coalition’s mission.
  • Understands confidentiality laws and adheres to confidentiality laws in regard to the agency, its programs, and its tenants and residents.
  • Complete training as assigned & requested
  • Maintain positive relationships and communication with local agencies, Coalition members and other stakeholders.
  • Work with the members of the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers within scope of role.
  • Be flexible by performing other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Job Requirements

  • The position is part-time, 20 hours per week without benefits.
  • The position’s rate of pay is to be set annually by the Board of Directors.
  • Merit raises are considered annually based on funding levels awarded to the Coalition by its private and governmental sponsors.
  • The position holder will need a driver’s license and suitable vehicle to accomplish gathering supplies and travel between properties. Mileage will be reimbursed at the prevailing Federal rate.
  • The position holder must comply with the Crawford County on Housing Needs, Inc.’s policies and procedures.

The Crawford County Coalition on Housing Needs, Inc's mission is to collaborate with the community to identify the housing needs of the homeless and near homeless in Crawford County, and to advocate for, build, and manage decent, affordable housing to meet those needs. This mission is rooted in the belief that having a home is vital and necessary when addressing life challenges.

Our membership is a diverse cross-section of Crawford County residents who represent various agencies, clients, organizations, and businesses that are involved in housing issues. At least one-third of our board members are low-income or specifically represent those who are low-income individuals. Our board meetings are open to the public and are held the second Thursday of every month virtually. All are welcome and input is encouraged.

The Nonprofit Partnership's offices at The Susan Hirt Hagen Center for Transformational Philanthropy are open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
